Are you looking to meet and play with other passionate musicians in a fun and encouraging environment this summer? This is the camp for you!
The five-day Music And Collab Summer Camp provides an intensive yet fun learning experience designed to enhance chamber music and collaborative skills of piano and string students. Participants will perform in a variety of ensemble settings and receive training to develop essential musical skills, such as: performance technique, rhythmical comprehension, sight-reading, communication, and teamwork.
Activities include:
- Daily practice sessions
- Ensembles rehearsals and private coaching
- Skill set training – rhythm drills, sight-reading, scales & arpeggios
- Solo performance opportunities
- Workshops (e.g. art of collaboration, music appreciation, music memory, dictation etc.)
- Worship band experience (lead sheet reading, basic improvisation etc.)
- Team building through games and fellowship
- MAC Camp Concert – to be held on Friday, June 23rd at 3 PM
*Strings students at the intermediate level are those who are currently learning pieces in Suzuki Book 3 and higher.
*Piano students at the intermediate level are those who are currently learning pieces at the level equivalent to, but not limited to:
Two-Part Inventions by J. S. Bach
Dances (German dances Écossaises, Minuets, Waltzes) by Ludwig van Beethoven
25 Progressive Pieces by Johann F. Burgmüller
Sonatinas, Op. 36 by Muzio Clementi

Please submit one YouTube video link (unlisted) of the following with your online registration:
Strings
- One major and one minor scale (minimum of two octaves) of your choice at a minimum tempo of MM 60 in eighth-note rhythm
- One solo piece that best showcases your current musical level and proficiency (Suzuki Book 3 and higher)
Pianists
- One major and one minor scale (minimum of two octaves) of your choice, with a key signature of at least two sharps or flats, at a minimum tempo of MM 60 in sixteenth-note rhythm
- One piano piece that best showcases your current musical level and proficiency
Current New Heart Students
- By your New Heart teacher’s evaluation and recommendation only (no video needed)

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:
- Doors open at 8:40am daily. Lunch and extended day care are not provided (please bring your own lunch).
- Students will be given ensemble assignments and repertoire several weeks before the camp starts. It is the student’s responsibility to practice and learn their assigned pieces prior to camp in order to facilitate the most effective rehearsals and coaching.
FACULTY
Dr. Yi-Chiu Rachel Chao
A native of Taiwan, Yi-Chiu Rachel Chao received Doctor of Music under the guidance of Alan Chow from Northwestern University. Prize winners at Taiwan National Piano Competition, MTNA Competition, Sorel Medallion Piano Collaboration Competition in New York City, and Bradshaw & Buono International Piano Competition. Performances at Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall, the Chicago Cultural Center, the Houston Hobby Center, and the New York City Center. Currently a piano instructor at the New Heart Christian School of Music, she has taught at Camp Encore-Coda in Sweden, Maine, and in California State University, Bakersfield. As a collaborative pianist, she serves as the staff pianist for the voice program at the Shepherd School of Music at Rice University, and collaborates with the Houston Ballet and the Houston Grand Opera.
Joshua Chua
Born in Malaysia, Joshua Chua was awarded the “A.B.R.S.M Grade 8 music theory” in 2003, and the “Licentiate of the Royal Schools of Music diploma certificate” (L.R.S.M) in 2005. Received his Master of Music in collaborative piano performance from University of Houston Moores School of Music under Timothy Hester. Has more than sixteen years of piano teaching experience, and has helped numerous students achieve excellent results in A.B.R.S.M piano and theory exams. Has more than fifteen years of experience in collaborative piano performance, and has worked with numerous vocalists and instrumentalists in diploma exams, concerts, and competitions, as well as serving in worship team. As an experience church pianist and keyboardist, he has conducted workshops at different churches in Houston and Asia.
Dr. Judy Wu, a native of Taiwan, continues to expand her music horizon in the areas of performing and teaching. She received her Doctor of Musical Arts and Master of Music in Cello performance from the University of Texas at Austin and her Bachelor of Fine Arts from the National Taiwan Normal University. While at UT Austin, she studied with the renowned pedagogue, Phyllis Young, and was a Teaching Assistant in the String Department and String Project. She was the winner of the 2nd Annual WRR Chamber Music Competition in 2005 and also received several outstanding recognitions from the Fischoff national Chamber Music Competition. She is a Suzuki-certified cello teacher, having accumulated over 20 years of teaching experience and organizing summer music camps such as Little Bach Music Camp, String Camp, and All-State Music camp. She has recorded more than 10 albums with New Heart Music Ministries as a cellist since 2006 and currently serves as the School Director of the New Heart Christian School of Music.
Samuel Cho was born in San Francisco, United States and grew up in Taipei, Taiwan. His early musical experiences were primarily with drums, guitar, piano and singing a cappella. However, he found his greatest satisfaction in playing and teaching the cello, which led him to pursue a music career. Samuel was awarded his Master of Musical Arts from Conservatory and Dance at the University of Missouri Kansas City, where he was a member of the Graduate Fellowship String Quartet, and his Bachelor of Musical Arts degree from Georgia Southern University. As an educator, Samuel served as music faculty at St. Mary's Academy in St. Mary, Kansas, String Sprouts program in Kansas City, Missouri, Savannah Country Day School in Savannah, Georgia and Triplains USD 275 public school in Winona, Kansas.
